The Prince Leopold Inn goes green with food waste recycling
When a new waste-to-energy plant was built on the outskirts of Warminster, the owners of the Prince Leopold Inn decided it would be the perfect time to improve their green credentials by sending their food waste to be recycled into energy.
Malaby Biogas, who operate the Bore Hill Farm Biodigester on Deverill Road have been running the trial “Direct to AD” scheme for over a month, and have made twice-weekly collections of food waste buckets from the Prince Leopold Inn at Upton Lovell.
Waste from food preparation as well as leftover food from the pub and restaurant gets assigned to special sealable buckets, which are transported to the plant where the waste goes through a process of Anaerobic Digestion and converted into heat and energy.
Chris Wood, partner in the Prince Leopold, says, “The Prince Leopold was happy to be first pub to sign up to Malaby Biogas’s food waste collection round because we were finally able to do something that reduced our waste travel miles and made our bins cleaner. The land fill is over 40 miles away whereas Malaby Biogas is just 3 miles away! It is fantastic that we have a ground breaking business on our doorstep so now we can genuinely tell our customers we are being green and supporting local businesses. The service we get is brilliant and it has made our kitchens and our staff cleaner and greener. All in such a short period of time. It’s a win-win from our point of view.”
Prince Leopold Inn hosts the Jubilee Lunch for Upton Lovellers!
Fish and Chips voted Favourite Dish for celebrating the Diamond Jubilee
In a recent poll by the localpeople websites, almost half of those who responded said they would prefer to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee by tucking into a delicious plate of Fish and Chips. As we produce one of the yummiest and best-looking Fish and Chips dishes in the area, pop in and see us over the Jubilee weekend and get stuck in!
The Prince Leopold Inn earns TripAdvisor Reward
The Prince Leopold Inn is proud to announce that it has received a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence Award.
The accolade, which honours hospitality excellence, is given only to establishments that consistently achieve outstanding traveller reviews on TripAdvisor, and is extended to qualifying businesses worldwide. Just 10 percent of accommodations listed on TripAdvisor receive this prestigious award.
To qualify for the Certificate of Excellence, the Prince Leopold Inn has maintained an overall rating of four or higher, out of a possible five, as reviewed by travellers on TripAdvisor. Additional criteria which are factored into the award include the volume of reviews received within the last 12 months.
Jayne Duff, owner of the Prince Leopold Inn said “We strive to offer our customers a memorable experience, and this accolade is evidence that our hard work is translating into positive traveller reviews on TripAdvisor. There is always room for improvement in this business, but since taking over the Leo in 2010 we are very pleased with the customer feedback.”
“TripAdvisor is pleased to honour exceptional businesses for consistent excellence, as reviewed by travellers on the site,” said Christine Petersen, president of TripAdvisor for Business. “The Certificate of Excellence award gives highly rated establishments around the world the recognition they deserve. From exceptional accommodations in Beijing to remarkable restaurants in Boston, we want to applaud these businesses for offering TripAdvisor travellers a great customer experience.”
Warminster Wedding Fair - Sunday 4 March
We were present on Sunday at the fabulous début for the Warminster Wedding Fair, organised by David McGirr Photography in Warminster. We were one of several exhibitors at a very professional, well-organised and well-received Wedding Fair, with hundreds of visitors throughout the day who braved the rain!
Having already held a number wedding receptions, we explained to several couples looking for a venue in 2012/13 about our riverside restaurant which can accommodate 60+, lovely garden with space for a marquee, flexible menu choices, bed and breakfast accommodation and our friendly and helpful staff. We believe the Prince Leopold Inn is a perfect choice for a couple looking for stylish and informal wedding reception in a delightful riverside setting!
Sausage O'Clock at the Leo: Have you heard the latest ? Every evening at 7pm the Prince Leopold offers free sausages to nibble on at the bar whilst you sup on a pint of local ale and wind down after a hard day tilling the fields (or whatever it is you do)!
Congratulations to Mrs Cornock who wins a meal for two in our monthly (December) prize draw!
New Year's Eve Quiz Evening a success!!
New Year's Eve went off with a charitable bang at the Prince Leopold Inn at Upton Lovell, near Warminster, with a very well-attended "Big Leo Quiz of the Year" evening on 31 December 2011.
Over 100 guests, including local villagers and seasoned quizzers, descended on the Prince Leopold Inn to see in 2012 with a delicious 2-course supper and a challenging "End of the Year" Quiz which also included tasting and picture rounds.
Ticket sales included a charity donation, with the winning team to decide the chosen charity. Andrew Durham, leader of the winning team, elected to donate the £200 to Macmillan Nurses. By pure coincidence, Andrew Duff, brother of Charlie Duff (owner of the Leo) sits on the Board of Trustees for MacMillan Nurses, so we were able to ensure the cheque got there directly!
Guests enjoyed a glass of bubbly to see in the New Year, and dancing went on into the early hours.
Guest Barman on Remembrance Sunday - Lt Col Nick Bailey
Last year on Remembrance Sunday Lt Col Nick Bailey kindly appeared as our "Guest Barman". Nick is a thoroughly nice chap who lives in the village, and to raise awareness for Remembrance Sunday Nick will again be reprising his impersonation of Tom Cruise in "Cocktail"...so come on down and let him pull you a delicious pint of ale or glass of wine.
The Garden is Open!
Our Riverside Beer Garden is well and truly open for business...overlooking the beautiful Wylyle (pretty shallow on this stretch so you can even have a little paddle if you're careful), we have plenty of tables as well as a lovely restaurant veranda, where you can enjoy a delicious meal, soak up some rays and try some Wiltshire bitter. We get very busy on the weekends and whenever the sun is out, and offer a garden menu including scrummy Fish, Meat and Vegetable Mezzes to share, and selection of fresh, crisp white and rosé wines!
Congratulations to Ray & Pam!
We were honoured to hold the Wedding Reception for two of our lovely locals, Ray & Pam, along with 100 of their friends and family! Despite the atrocious weather (it was bucketing down for most of the day) everyone had a wonderful time, enjoyed Bucks Fizz, Singapore Slings and a delicious Wiltshire Ham carvery buffet. We accommodated the guests in both the restaurant and the adjoining marquee, and everyone adapted well to the "wet and wild" conditions! Every at the Leo wishes Ray and Pam all the very best for the future!
Summer Solstice - 21 June 2011
We are located just 20 mins' drive from the heritage site of Stonehenge, a mecca for worshippers of the Summer Solstice on June 21.
If you are on your way to or from Stonehenge this week, why not pop in and see us for a swift half or a pub lunch?
Wylye Valley Art Trail
Artistic juices have been flowing at the Leo - over the last week or so we have welcome, accommodated, fed and watered literally hundreds of visitors to the Wylye Valley Art Trail which has been a great success! Our best wishes go out to all the exhibitors along the WVAT and hope that you all had an enjoyable - and profitable - few days!
A Right Royal Picnic
We had a very successful few days in conjunction with our friends the Puddys, from the White Horse Trekking Centre in Codford (www.whitehorsetrekking.co.uk) where several guests went riding and enjoyed a delicious Champagne picnic amongst bluebells in nearby woods. The weather was glorious, a good time was had by all, and washed down the next day with the Royal Wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton!
Bank Holidays Galore
We have been very busy at the Prince Leopold over the numerous Bank Holiday weekends. Easter Monday was exceptionally busy, with a fully-booked restaurant and customers taking advantage of the lovely weather and enjoying a pint and lunch in our riverside garden.
